Once again, the team traveled to Lydden Hill, now regarded as our home circuit, for two races at the Kent venue. With the weather playing havoc with tyre choices, Paul persuaded the team to opt for slicks for the practice of our first race. It looked a brave decision as most of the rest of the field were on wet tyres. Though he later said he would have preferred wets, Mark got his car onto 8th place on the grid, seconds behind pole and alongside David Abbott, who qualified seventh. For the race, the rain came down and wet tyres were in order, in fact the car wore treaded tyres for the rest of the meeting. Three out of the four Mini's retired from the race, Mark lasting until lap 6 where retired with a misfire from a damp distributor. The highlight was Mark overtaking David Abbott at Paddock in the wet. Nobody could quite believe it, least of all David.
For the second race, the option of tyres was taken away. It was always going to be rain tyres. Mark has always proclaimed to be happy in the wet and sure enough, he qualified fifth , less than 3 seconds behind pole and a second ahead of David Abbott. The race was definitely action packed, Our Miglia was all sideways at the first bend and lost 3 places. It then settled down to a race long tussle with Steve Govett's Rover 216 GTi. In the end, Steve braked a little early for Devil's Elbow and our Mini ran gently into the back of the Rover. For a few moments it looked like both contenders were going to get away with it when they both spun independently in the left hander. They both went off onto the inside of the corner and then had another coming together while on the grass which pushed Steve's Rover back onto the circuit. Mark bogged down and watched the rest of the race from behind the tyre wall.
The Mini took what appeared to be only cosmetic damage during the days events, but it transpired the radiator and a few hoses and the electric water pump were broken.
Have a look in the Gallery for some short video footage which features Marks overtaking maneuver at Paddock and the incident with the GTi.
