A two day meeting at Brands Hatch took the team to Kent with high hopes. Gerald Dale had worked his wonders on the suspension of the car and the pre race strip down had gone well, save for some doubts about new brake shoes.
In qualifying on the Saturday, we only managed a fastest lap of 58 seconds and got a telling off from series champion Peter Baldwin, who was installed next to us in the paddock. Qualifying had been cut short by a mystery overheating problem which meant Mark really only had three laps in anger to post the time. It put us a rather disappointing tenth out of thirteen.
On the Sunday, as on the previous day, occasion showers gave the entire paddock the tyre-choice jitters. In the event, the BOSS Formula One cars with their enormous slicks, 600 BHP and downforce dried the track so one could have sworn there had been a month long drought. Mark took the Miglia into the paddock quite late, to the consternation of the team watching from the grandstands.
From the off, it was clear that we were a little off the pace, if consistent, posting 58 second laps. While Peter Baldwin and Steve Bell were crowd-pleasing up front, Mark settled into his mid field rythm, finally finishing 12th.
Mark had hoped to go faster throughout the meeting and was ultimately disappointed. It did, however mean a signature on the license and an unbroken car. In the final analysis, the car was two seconds a lap too slow but the handling was much improved, the dreaded understeer largely banished. An attempted minor adjustment of the front shock absorbers was abandoned due to the adjuster being seized.
